School Bullying, Students with Disabilities, and School Safety

Continuing Education Units: This program is presented in conjunction with the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. CRC credit hours are pending for Rehabilitation Counseling. CEUs are also pending for Social Work, Early Care & Education, Effective Instructional Leadership (EILA), and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

Students cannot learn to their full potential and teachers cannot teach in an environment in which they feel unsafe. This session will begin with a brief history of school bullying and school violence, with a particular focus on the current climate in schools for students with disabilities. The presenters will also discuss intervention efforts to decrease bullying in schools, including approaches to preventing electronic bullying. The session will conclude by outlining how to ensure a culture of safety and create more inclusive environments for the success of all students.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Develop an understanding of the history of school bullying for students with disabilities.
  2. Learn intervention approaches to decreasing bullying.
  3. Become familiar with the key challenges to creating a more inclusive school environments for the success of all students.
