HDI Seminar Series - Disabilities and Civil Rights Past and Present

In affiliation with the UK College of Social Work, this seminar offers a very captivating and personal look into the struggles those with disability faced prior to the passage of the ADA and continue to confront.

Arthur CampbellArthur Campbell, disability activist, was born with a condition which affected his physical mobility and his speech. His life of advocacy is the subject of an award winning PBS documentary.  The film clips and Arthur will demonstrate that a person with significant disabilities can surmount the misconceptions of his family and his doctors, and can achieve independent living and profound contributions to the disability and civil rights movement. Though Arthur was provided no formal education he has been in the forefront in state and national self-advocacy groups utilizing both conventional advocacy and civil disobedience.  

 

Norb RyanNorb Ryan is a well-known Kentuckian and leader. He has been Kentucky’s A.D.A. Coordinator for the past 8 years.  He will also share through personal and historical perspectives, the disability movement in the United States.  Legislation enacted prior to the Americans with Disability Act will be discussed, as well as the disparity of rights prompting the need for the Americans with Disabilities Act.  He will explain definitions and areas of impact this law has had on those with disabilities and to accessibility to institutions and employment, as well as new amendments to the A.D.A.  

 

This seminar is open to parents, students, consumers, community and anyone working in the human service field as a professional.  Awareness of the A.D.A. and recent amendments is crucial for all citizens!   CEU applications are being submitted for professionals working in social work, psychology and vocational rehabilitation.
