Abstract: This booklet is designed to assist and support parents in developing relationships and routines when babies come home after a stay in the intensive care nursery due to premature birth, birth complications, or other developmental disorders. It addresses the following topics: (1) transition from the hospital to the home; (2) early days at home; (3) adapting your home; (4) reading your baby's cues or signals; (5) establishing schedules and routines; (6) the birth experience; (7) understanding the baby's development; (8) determining the baby's age; (9) baby characteristics during hospitalization and recovery; (10) the importance of parents' relationships with babies; (11) developmental expectations and outcomes for recovering babies; (12) the first week at home; (13) the first 6 months after discharge; (14) the second 6 months after discharge; (15) long term outcomes; and (15) community resources for children with special needs, including infant follow-up programs, community nursing services, and early intervention programs. A glossary of related terms is provided, and an appendix provides a list of resources on child development and learning.
